Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for assessment of ground conditions
   • Access, interpret and apply ground condition documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues and implement control measures
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Determine and confirm ground areas to be inspected and assessed
   • Obtain and interpret existing information on ground condition of each area to provide an initial assessment
   • Communicate and coordinate activities with others prior to, during and on completion of the work activity
   • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for an emergency
   • Access area to be assessed and ensure there is adequate lighting to perform the assessment
   • Ensure that adequate ventilation is flowing into the work area
2. Inspect and assess ground conditions
   • Conduct visual inspection of work area, and identify adverse conditions which could affect ground stability and safety
   • Conduct assessment and identify and record areas which are stable and unstable
   • Select and use tools, equipment and techniques to confirm ground stability of stable area, and remove loose material before commencing or continuing to next area
   • Install barricades and warning signs where area cannot be made safe or ground is assessed as unstable
   • Continuously assess ground conditions during work activities
3. Record and report ground conditions
   • Record ground condition assessment results and recommended corrective actions
   • Report ground conditions and recommended corrective actions to relevant personnel

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant legislation, documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient assessing of ground conditions including:

selecting and using relevant tools and equipment

working wearing personal protective equipment

hazard identification and control, and reporting defects

ensuring environmental compliance

interpreting documents, plans, reports, maps, specifications

isolation of equipment

applying scale/bar down procedures

works effectively with others to undertake and complete the assessing of ground conditions that meets all of the required outcomes including:

complying with written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

communicating clearly and concisely with others to resolve coordination requirements prior to commencing and during work activities

organising work tasks and applying diagnostic, problem solving and decision making techniques

selecting and using communications equipment

demonstrates completion of assessing ground conditions that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

conducting inspections of work area

identifying stable and unstable ground

selecting and using tools, equipment and techniques for assessment of ground conditions

installing barricades and warning signs where required

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of the following when assessing ground conditions:

site product characteristics, types of ground, and the characteristics of unsafe ground conditions including:

potential hazards

adverse conditions

site geological and survey data

identifying support equipment and processes, and using within technical capabilities and limitations
